Arthritis causes degeneration of the cartilage so how can Rehabilitation help these patients?  Certainly the deleterious effects on cartilage occur, but that is only part of the story.  Other impacts include:

  • Pain! All of the innervated structures around the joint can be impacted including the joint capsule and lining (synovium), bone, ligaments, muscles, etc.
  • Periarticular fibrosis (scar tissue affecting the structures around the joint), which decreases range of motion and flexibility
  • Muscle atrophy and weakness, due to inactivity as well as from impacts to the nervous system
  • Loss of coordination and proprioception which impairs the ability of the muscles to protect the joints during movement
  • Myofascial trigger points (“knots” in the muscles) often develop in the muscles that are trying unsuccessfully to compensate for weak muscles

All of these changes represent opportunities for Rehabilitation to positively impact comfort, posture, and mobility.  Contact us for information on how we can help improve your pet’s quality of life!
